Functional Patterns is a results based training system, check out our latest results below…

In life, we all hear that we need to get our priorities straight. You rarely hear this when it comes to training. The common notion is that any exercise you do is good exercise. That as long as you're moving, you're doing great. Although one can make an argument for that, we see it a bit differently..
.
.
There are some movements that are more compatible with the human body than others. The concern we have at @functionalpatterns is determining what movements seem to correspond with our blueprint. The more we code human movement, the more obvious it becomes that running optimally is the best way to get in shape and stay young. .
.
This all sounds simple enough until our running is put on video. Many people in our field film their squat form. Very few film their running form. I think filming running form should be a benchmark to gauge fitness. .
.
There are a select few who train squats and still run well, but the good running is likely genetically hardwired into their structure. Most of us are hard wired to not run well. The purpose of FP is to create the environmental stimuli to hardwire good mechanics into the body. .
.
We know that changing running mechanics to most is not a big deal. When we showcase a biomechanical change on videos, they get a lesser response than other posts. Believe it or not, the greatest changes that happen on people physically often times are facilitated by better running. The idea is a bit ahead of the times, but in the future that will change. .
.
Film your running and analyze it in slow motion. It will give you insight into a lot of what's going on in your body.

FP Human Biomechanics Specialist @fp.jamesruport displaying how his change in running economy altered many things in his life for the better. An imbalanced gait is one of the hardest functions to correct. Because of the challenge associated with it, it is often avoided. At FP we tackle the problems few else want to, which takes us and our clients to places no one else can go. Great work James! Be sure to read the story below!

Before 14.5 mph after 18 (according to the treadmill)
.
As a kid I dislocated both my shoulders 50 times or so, I honestly lost count.
.
My coaches called them stingers. I saw a DO and he called it tendinitis. I was referred to an OT for shoulder stability protocols, but that was too little too late.
.
My right shoulder (and probably my left. Hand hill Sachs lesion, slap tears, bicep fraying, and bankart lesions.
.
I had surgery on my right shoulder in high school. “Son your shoulder looked worse than the 60 year olds I operate on” said my doc.
.
The before video was October of 2017. Shoulders still popping, any club, KB, or dynamic dumbbell exercises were dangerous. My Ac joints taking a lot of stress, and the trauma solidified my cervical scoliosis.
.
The after video is may 2020.
.
I have done damage that might be irreversible, but my best bet is #functionalpatterns.
.
No other system is hydrating tissues like this, my shoulders feel great, I literally feel my traps releasing from running. I can retentions my bicep/tricep while jogging to retention my right shoulder capsule and I’m finally getting a grip of my scoliosis.
.
Still so much work to be done.

Fantastic GAIT GAINS from HBS practitioner @fplabib and his client putting in the work to make changes. READ BELOW!
.
.
"Update on Deborah’s progress following on from our previous gait post, she is now able to run! After 3 months of @functionalpatterns training Deborah is making amazing progress in her movement. She is feeling more confident with her movement everyday. See what Deborah has to say below:"
.
.
“My world changed after a almost fatal motor bike accident.  I was not ever expected to walk again after a smashed femur, a shorter leg and other injuries. My balance and cognitive functioning had been a major issue. I have spent many years in a wheel chair and trying to walk as best I could with crutches.  Walking on crutches in a crowd was scary and walking across the road was so difficult.  I could not turn quickly or walk over rough terrain.  Walking up & down steps was hard and if there was no rail, I couldn’t do it.  I had to have someone with me for support all the time.

Life changed again after training with Mark Labib. Mark introduced me to the Functional Patterns program.  Every session, I see my physical and cognitive ability changing.  I feel so much stronger in my core with the ability to stand and walk stronger. I found the functional patterns chambers work my muscles in conjunction with my cogitative functioning.

Feeling my muscles working and connecting across my body has strengthened my balance and ability to walk so much stronger. I was told I would get no more than a ten percent bend in my knee, look at what I can do now. Getting me out of a wheel chair and off Crutches has been amazing.  I may never be the 100% I once was, but I am well on my way to recovering more than I was ever expected.  With the assistance of Mark and the Functional Pattern Program I am so grateful to know I am not in the wheel chair or on crutches any longer, Thank you Mark. Walking into my surgeon recently, with out crutches was the best thing ever.  My surgeon almost cried and said I have never seen anything like this before, you are a miracle walking.”

"Shoulder range of motion gains

A few years ago, Winnie had two surgeries on her right chest area which limited her shoulder's range of motion. She tried passive stretching to reduce the post surgery adhesion, but the result was the same. However, after 3 sessions of @functionalpatterns ,she can now raise her right arm without feeling any restrictions."

If you aren't physically active or you never move in ways that actually challenge your structure, to most pain scientists in the industry, you might be the type of person that justifies their perspectives that biomechanics aren't the driver of a pain response. Contextually, if you move in ways you are familiar with and those motions fall within the realm of joint adaptability, you wont feel pain. The problem is that the ways we typically need to move most are the ways we don't move. Pain and biomechanics are definitely tied to one another in most instances. .
.
The problem with unfamiliar motion is that we have a predisposition as adults to use the same patterns in everything we do. If your body is rotated to the left, it doesn't matter what you do in terms of variability in training. You can squat, punch, kick, do backflips, etc. But unless you get deep into understanding your problems, you are not going to rotate to your right. Or you will but to a limited degree. .
.
When people don't feel pain when they have joint mispositioning, it simply means that joint is not actually being tested. The body has accomodated a set of mechanics around that place as a protection mechanism. If you put any person with a joint severely out of place and force it to deal with a demand, that's when the pain may likely set off. .
.
This is the predicament most people come to us with. If you're new here and wondering what this is all about, simply speaking, there are scientists in the field making claims that pain and biomechanics have little relation to one another. Our argument here is whether or not these scientists have sound biomechanical knowledge that enables them to make these very bold claims. .
.
I think anyone who is willing to say biomechanics and pain do not have substantial correlations need to show that they have corrected biomechanical problems on people before drawing that assertion. I think it's easier to dismiss the correction of biomechanics than it is to get good at correcting biomechanics. Simply speaking, a person shouldn't downplay the importance on something they know very little about. .

Testimony:
“I've been physically active all of my life – and was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis in my early 20’s. Over the years, my training has changed from soccer and running, to years of yoga, and ultimately heavy weightlifting the past six years…resulting in back pain, noticeably asymmetries, and my own physical insecurities. I’ve sought the professional advice of chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, and personal trainers who all gave me conflicting guidance. I was always unhappy with the results. I just felt like I was getting more and more “crooked.” Gabe introduced me to Functional Patterns 4-5 months ago – and when he showed me the before and after pics of scoliosis changes, I knew I NEEDED to try this. In just this short time, I have seen significant changes in my movement, coordination, and posture. I realize I never really understood the damage and compression I was doing to my body over the years. I still have a lot to improve on, but I'm excited to commit to FP training and see the results.”

Functionality in training is definitely more broad than FP's BIG 4, STANDING, WALKING, RUNNING AND THROWING. With that said, all functional human motions are interwoven with the big 4. The better you have the big 4 wired in, the more output and efficiency you get from your mechanics. In the world of dealing with pain, this is the holy grail.
.
.
I know you all watch attentively at the results being presented on this page and wonder how it all happens. It happens when you codify the functions that matter most to humans. Priority counts and unfortunately most people are still yet to understand those priorities in their exercise regimens.
.
.
When people realize this, society will look much better than it currently does. We can do this, we just need to put our focus in places that will yield consistent results.

We will be running soon.
